Our Lady of Mercy School is an independent school with one class from each grade from Kindergarten to Grade 7. At Our Lady of Mercy School we follow the complete curriculum prescribed by the B.C. Ministry of Education, as well as the Archdiocesan Elementary Religious Education Curriculum approved by our Archbishop.
In addition, at each grade level we offer music and French programs. The Ministry curriculum is often enhanced through field experiences and hands on learning. Daily prayer, weekly Masses and regular reception of the sacrament of Reconciliation enhance the religion curriculum and are celebrated by the school’s pastor, Fr. Hien Nguyen. Catholic faith in the school is the underpinning for all other studies and activities. The parents, staff, students and the parish work and worship together as a faith community.
Assessment and Evaluation
Assessment and evaluation is based upon all aspects of each student’s participation, achievement, and progress throughout the school year and includes oral as well as written responses and achievements.
Reporting to Parents
• Parents are provided with a written report for each child three times per year. Included in the reporting process are parent-teacher interviews, student-led parent conferences, or three-way (teacher/parent/child) conferences.
• Teachers will also be in contact with parents informally at least two times a year with interim reports. There are no letter grades on interim reports. Additionally, teachers utilize various technology programs to keep parents up-to-date with class activities and notices.
• Parents are encouraged to make an appointment with a teacher to discuss the child’s progress at any time.
Homework
It is the responsibility of the parents to check on their child’s homework and to see that it is satisfactorily completed. The following schedule will give you an idea of the average amount of homework you can expect your child to receive each evening. Please allow a degree of flexibility when applying these guidelines:
Grades 1 – 2: approximately 10 – 20 minutes
Grades 3 – 4: approximately 30 – 40 minutes
Grades 5 – 6: approximately 50 – 60 minutes
Grade 7: approximately 75 – 90 minutes
